Our Story: 20 Years of CYT Fredericksburg

CYT Fredericksburg · 2006–2026

OUR STORY

Twenty years of theater.
A community of memories.
Our Fredericksburg beginnings

A small beginning.
A lasting community.

In 2006, CYT Fredericksburg was founded in partnership with CYT Richmond, now known as CharacterWorks, launching with its first production, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. During its first two years, CYT Richmond provided guidance and support, helping Fredericksburg build a strong foundation. After two full seasons together, CYT Fredericksburg became its own branch in the fall of 2008 with its production of Willy Wonka Jr. Twenty years after its beginnings, CYT Fredericksburg continues to nurture character, creativity, and community through youth theater rooted in Christian values.

How CYT began

CYT was founded in 1981 as a nonprofit, after-school theater arts program in San Diego, CA, by Paul and Sheryl Russell. Starting with 24 students producing You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, it grew throughout San Diego county.
In 1997, families from San Diego moved to Chicago, IL and Spokane, WA, with a deep desire to bring CYT to their new communities. These families became the founders to start their own local Branches under the CYT umbrella. Since then, founders and founding families across the nation have opened their own Branches of CYT.
We like to say that CYT is similar to a tree. Branches are licensed affiliates of CYT Inc and are established as a nonprofit of their own.
