How does a director decide on a vision for a production? Are their artistic choices informed by the script or are they their own original thoughts? What steps go into the artistic creation and production of a play? In Directing: The Next Level, students will discover the answer to these questions as they discover how to craft and create their own artistic visions for a production. In other words, they will build a show from the ground up according to their artistic vision. Building upon the principles learned in Directing: The Basics, students will read and complete an in-depth analysis of an assigned contemporary play. They will then determine how to incorporate all the artistic elements of a show and align them with their chosen vision. Students will do this through the creation of makeup and costume plots, set and stage designs and models (to scale), as well as specific and general lighting elements. All of these elements will be arranged on a vision board and then presented at the showcase. Nothing is more satisfying to a director than seeing their artistic vision come to life. In this class, students will take their first steps towards that.
*As a general note, this class will require students to complete some work and projects outside the class as well as require them to remain on top of any and all deadlines given. Additionally, class time will involve a lot of research and so a computer, tablet, or phone are highly recommended/required. Students will also need to be prepared to conduct research for materials outside the class to be used in their vision board.
